Unbundled Legal Services: A Lawyer in Your Corner, Without the Full Retainer

In Ontario, more than half of the people in family court do not have a lawyer. That number isn't just a statistic, it reflects how many people feel that meaningful legal help is out of reach. But the choice has never truly been “hire a full-service lawyer” or “go it completely alone.” There's a supportive middle ground, and it has a name.

What “unbundled” means

Unbundled, or limited-scope, legal services let you hire a lawyer for specific parts of your matter rather than the whole thing. Instead of handing over your entire case, you get professional support exactly when you need it: reviewing your documents, preparing a court form, helping you understand your financial disclosure, building a negotiation strategy, or coaching you before a court appearance.

How it differs from a traditional retainer

When you retain a lawyer in the traditional sense, they usually become counsel of record, communicate on your behalf, attend court for you, and manage the file from start to finish, typically beginning with an upfront retainer and billing by the hour as the file moves along.

A limited-scope model works differently. You stay in control of your matter, and a lawyer provides clarity, structure, and guidance at the moments that matter most. Fees are fixed and known in advance, so there are no surprises.

Our fixed fees are clear and upfront, so you always know what to expect and can plan accordingly.

Who it's for

This model suits anyone who wants to navigate their family law journey with more clarity and confidence — not only those for whom a full retainer is out of reach. Some people want to stay hands-on in their own case. Others simply need help in a few specific areas. And for some, focused support is a smart first step before deciding whether to retain a full-service lawyer.

Already working with a lawyer? Coaching still helps

Coaching isn't only for people representing themselves. If you've already retained legal counsel, our support can complement the advice you're receiving, helping you understand your materials, organize your thoughts, and prepare for conversations and appearances. The goal is to help you be a better, more informed client, so your time with your lawyer is focused and productive.

Whichever path you choose, our aim is the same: to help you be a confident, well-prepared participant in your own matter.

Empowering you to advocate for yourself

What makes the LAWra approach distinctive is the focus on empowering you. Founder and family law lawyer Ryan Clarke works to give you the understanding, structure, and confidence to represent yourself effectively, equipping you to do this yourself, rather than simply doing it for you. And if you're working alongside counsel, that same coaching helps you show up prepared and engaged.

Importantly, unbundled services are meant to complement legal advice, not replace it. If your matter is complex, or involves safety concerns, full representation may be the right path — and we'll tell you so. Wherever you are in the process, we're here.
